Brits of a certain age may wax nostalgic for the Morris J-Type delivery van, which was produced from 1949 to 1960. Now Morris Commercial has announced that it will produce a new electric edition of the iconic van.
The Morris JE features a carbon fibre chassis, a 60 kWh battery pack, a 200-mile range, a 1,000 kg payload, 5.5 cubic meters of load space and a 2.5-ton gross weight. The top speed is set at 90 mph. The van can fast charge to 80% in 30 minutes.
The Morris JE’s retro styling is expected to be a major selling point (to say nothing of the cool name), but Morris says it is not a replica of the old classic Morris J-Type, but rather a new interpretation of the design. The JE is based on a new modular platform that Morris Commercial hopes to use for future variants such as a pickup, minibus and campervan.
Morris Commercial is an all-electric brand: “We will never make a vehicle with an internal combustion engine.” It has backing from the unnamed UK and European investors, a design and engineering facility in Worcestershire, and a strategy to produce a “UK-sourced” electric powertrain.
The new Morris JE e-van recently made its debut at the London Design Museum and is scheduled to go on sale at the end of 2021 at a price of around 60,000 pounds. Morris has not indicated whether it plans to export the vehicle to other markets in Europe.
